Rhinoplasty also known as a "nose job" or "nose reshaping", enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose as well as with the intent to correct curvatures of the nasal septum. It can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects in the nose by opening the blockages with this surgical procedure.
During this surgery:
The size of the nose can be reduced,
The size of the nose can be enlarged,
The nose can be made more harmonically with the face,
The low nasal tip can be removed,
The shape of the nose can be changed,
Wide nostrils can be narrowed and refined,
The angle between the nose and the upper lip can be changed (indirectly aimed at changing the shape of your nose),
Excess bone on the nasal bridge can be removed for the purpose of correction,
During rhinoplasty, developmental or traumatic deviations can be corrected for protection or restoration of respiratory functions.
Before deciding on having plastic surgery, you must ponder on your expectations and share them with your doctor. If you are physically healthy, psychologically well balanced, and realistic regarding your expectations, you can be a good candidate. In order to better understand what the patient wants about the aesthetic change of his/her nasal shape, before-after photos of other patients are shown to the patient, and then he/she is requested to make a comment. Comments made by the patient will be guided in terms of his/her expectations.
The appropriate age for the surgery is over 16 years for women and over 17 years for men because rhinoplasty should only be performed on a nose that has finished growing and complete development has usually occurred by those ages. If rhinoplasty is performed before development is complete, continued growth can change the outcome of your surgery and cause potential problems and complications.
In modern rhinoplasty, the trend is to give a well-balanced and refined appearance to all the regions of the nose, in such a way as to ensure the procedures do not impair the nasal breathing function. Rhinoplasty is also intended to provide a natural and non-exaggerated nose appearance that does not reveal the operation.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. However, this is not severe general anesthesia, and the patient can go home 3-4 hours after surgery if he/she wants. Patients who spend the night of surgery at the hospital are discharged the next day if they have no severe problems. Rhinoplasty usually takes about an hour but may take longer when some complex or additional processes are required.

Silicons and perforated nasal packs are placed into the nose, which allows for breathing. Removal of such perforated nasal packs causes no pain. A thermal splint is applied to the nose during surgery. That splint is removed within 7 to 10 days and then a bandage is applied. Bruising may occur on and around the eyelids, and then they disappear within about 7-10 days. There may be swelling on the nasal ridge that can last 15-20 days or longer. 80-90% of such swellings disappear within the first month. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty poses a very low risk of complication. However, there are always risks of complications such as infection, nasal bleeding, or reaction to anesthesia. You can reduce the likelihood of such risks by following the advice given by your surgeon for preoperative and postoperative periods. Postoperative bleeding as leakage will be observed but it will stop completely within a few days. Rhinoplasty is performed through the nose and leaves no scar that can be seen on the outside of the nose. Your surgeon will give you instructions about how to get ready for surgery, eating and drinking rules, smoking cessation at least 1 week before if you are a smoker, how to wash your face, etc. Following these instructions carefully will help you undergo your surgery more comfortably.
The nasal skin is separated from the cartilage and bone structures and the nose is reshaped as desired. Reshaping depends on the patient’s problem and the technique preferred by the surgeon. Excess tissue parts are usually removed with very precise cutters. Removed tissues are sometimes used for also filling the existing deficiencies in any other part of the nose. Therefore, correcting both the inside and outside of the nose during the same session would be an appropriate intervention. Many plastic surgeons make surgical incisions through the nostrils. Sometimes, especially in patients with problematic nasal tips, “open” intervention can be preferred; and within this scope, a small incision is made in the middle part (columella) that separates the nostrils, for ensuring the relevant structures look better. If the “open technique” is used, or if broad and shallow nostrils need to be narrowed during rhinoplasty, a very small scar may remain between the nasal base and the upper lip. In eligible patients, open rhinoplasty can be performed without making any incision in this region.
Immediately after Nose Job and during the first 24 hours, you may feel your face swollen, your nose may ache, and you may have a dull headache. However, such a condition is completely eliminated with painkillers.
Especially the day after surgery, bruising and swelling may occur in the eyelids. This condition will dramatically improve in a few days. Applying a cold compress will reduce this swelling and enable you to feel better. Spend the first day in the bad, ensuring that your head is a little bit elevated. You can get up and walk a little in the evening on the same day of surgery. You can begin to take liquid foods orally, one or two hours after lying on your bed. In any case, you will have a better appearance compared to the previous one. Most of the swelling and bruising disappear within two weeks. 90% of the swelling disappears within the first month.
During the recovery period of your tissues, you should avoid hitting your nose for a period of at least one month. If any special operation has not been done, your nasal packs are removed the next day, and then you feel more comfortable. The plastic splint placed on the nasal ridge gets loose after a while, depending on the decrease of edema. The patient becomes capable of returning to school or work within about 10 to 14 days. It takes several weeks to completely return to your normal life. The surgeon will give you detailed information about returning to normal activities. You should abstain from activities that require intensive effort exertion (jogging, swimming, bending, sexual relationships, and activities that increase your blood pressure) for 2 weeks. Avoid hitting or rubbing your nose, or getting it sunburned for a period of at least 8 months. You can wear contact lenses once you feel better. If you have unusual problems or if you want to ask questions about what should be done and avoided, do not hesitate to call us to give you all the information.
A secondary surgical intervention also known as Complicated Rhinoplasty may be needed for correcting a minor deformity (such as unwanted lasting swellings) that can occur at very low rates (5%) after rhinoplasty. Such operations take shorter time of periods compared with the first surgery, and they are generally performed under local anesthesia. It is appropriate to perform such revision rhinoplasty operations after swellings completely disappear, preferably after six to twelve months later.
However, it is more difficult to correct important deformities or malformations that occur after incorrect operations performed by other surgeons, who are not competent in terms of experience and knowledge that is why choose your surgeon based on quality, training, and experience—not cost.
In such cases, applying secondary rhinoplasty will be the most effective method to produce a permanent solution.
All surgical packing within your nose will be removed within four to seven days after surgery. The splint and bandages on your nose will be removed in a week to ten days. It takes about ten to fourteen days before most of the swelling and bruising improves.
After the surgery, especially in the first 2-3 weeks, you are expected to protect your nose against impacts. Regular use of the medicines your doctor recommends will help you to recover more painlessly and faster. You may need to cleanse the blood clots accumulated in the nose with the recommended creams and ear cotton. Using natural and unadulterated ocean water will help to clean the nose.
There is no general alternative method in nasal surgeries because of the fact that each case has its own dynamics, but nasal fillings can be recommended to patients who complain about the nose belt and nasal tip, especially in accordance with the patient's expectations and wishes. Nasal fillers have a 12-18 month retention and are a fast-effective method. Please consult your doctor for further information.
In the first days after rhinoplasty, when your face is swollen and with bruises, you can easily forget that you will be better. In fact, many patients feel depressed after plastic surgery. This is quite natural and understandable. With relaxation, this stage will be over.
